EP07, Resolution on free-trade with the developing countries

Free-trade with the developing countries

- Resolution for the 2007 JEF-congress, submitted by JEF DK

It is not a secret that there exists a global injustice between the European countries and the poor countries outside the EU. The poverty has to be fought and by doing so we can also decrease the problems with the environment, refuges, terrorism, AIDS, civil wars and so on.

There have been provided many aids from different EU member states. It has resulted in many small projects, which have not been coordinated centrally.

At the same time, while Europeans have donated a lot of money for fighting the poverty, there are still high customs for importing goods in EU. And JEF-Europe sees it as double standards, which must be abolished.

EU has taken several steps to improve the situation, for example, by signing the ACP-EC partnership agreement, which should incorporate the world’s most poor countries in the global economy. It will be achieved by removing the quotas and the high duty customs for the goods imported from the 78 African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.

Because the poverty is still a problem, JEF-Europe urges the EU member states instead of many separate aid projects to have a common European aid policy and to increase the amount of the money, which is given.

We cannot fight the poverty just with the aid policy. Therefore JEF-Europe supports the EU initiative to give the possibility for 78 countries to trade freely with EU. But EU should not include just 78 countries or specific goods, such as food, in the agreement. EU have to enable the free trade worldwide even more, because in this way we can improve the conditions of millions of people, support the democracy and insure the human rights in the developing countries.
